About the museum
The house "Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum" in Leipzig's old town is one of Europe's oldest coffee houses; coffee has been served here since 1711. The sculpture on the portal of the building tells a piece of coffee culture history and gave the house its name.
Well-known guests came in every century, including Johann Christoph Gottsched and Robert Schumann. In the GDR era, the artists' café founded in 1978 met here; later, celebrities such as Kurt Masur and Mario Adorf visited the house.
Today the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig (Leipzig City History Museum) runs its own museum here. A tour through 16 historic rooms covers the strict coffeehouse regulations of the 18th century, the GDR coffee crisis, the colonial connections of coffee cultivation, and today's world trade. In the same building, a restaurant operates historic dining rooms such as the Schumann-Zimmer and the Kaisersaal.
