About the museum
The Haus zum Roten Ochsen on the Fischmarkt was first mentioned in 1392. In 1562, the woad merchant and city councilor Jacob Naffzer had it remodeled in the Renaissance style. A frieze above the first floor depicts the Muses and ancient planetary gods; at its center is the namesake red ox with golden horns.
After extensive restoration, the city opened the "Galerie am Fischmarkt" in the building in 1979, starting with a show of GDR arts and crafts. In the following years, the house hosted major craft exhibitions, including the Quadriennale of arts and crafts from socialist countries.
Since 2000, the institution has been called Kunsthalle Erfurt; it is one of the art museums of the Thuringian state capital. It has no collection of its own. On around 750 square meters, it shows changing exhibitions ranging from classical modernism to the present – retrospectives of established artists as well as work by young artists. A Renaissance hall on the second floor serves as a special exhibition space. Guided tours, lectures and events accompany the exhibitions; the house explicitly sees itself as a place for engaging with unfamiliar and even challenging positions in contemporary art.
