About the museum

Grain has been milled on the site of the Neue Mühle by the Schlösserbrücke since the 13th century, initially under names such as Hirschmühle or Martinsmühle. After a major fire in October 1736 destroyed the mill and many neighboring houses, it was rebuilt a short distance downstream and has borne its current name (New Mill) ever since; operations resumed in 1737.

The mill was modernized several times in the 19th and 20th centuries: after Carl Köhler bought it in 1867, roller mills were added, followed by a Zuppinger water wheel around 1895, an electric motor in 1919 and a Francis turbine in 1951. Flour and animal feed meal were produced here until 1982, when the city of Erfurt took over the building along with its fully preserved equipment.

On October 31, 1992, the mill opened as a museum of the Erfurt history museums. On several floors, visitors could follow the path of the grain from the water wheel through the millstones, roller mills and plansifters to the finished flour; since 1996 a hydropower plant has generated electricity. Due to damage to the load-bearing structure, the building has been closed to visitors since 2016. The mill wheel was restored and handed over in 2024, but the structural reinforcement of the building is still pending.
