About the museum

Ulm entrepreneur Siegfried Weishaupt and his wife Jutta assembled an extensive collection of modern art starting in 1967. To display it publicly, Weishaupt had an exhibition building constructed at his own expense in Ulm's Neue Mitte, right next to the town hall and within sight of the Minster; it opened in November 2007.

The building was designed by the architect Wolfram Wöhr, who had previously worked in Richard Meier's office. Its signature feature is a largely glazed, roughly 16-meter-high display facade through which artworks can be seen even from outside. The City of Ulm participates in the operation and provides, among other things, the gallery attendants.

The collection comprises several hundred paintings and sculptures, focusing on art from the 1950s onward: American abstraction by artists such as Mark Rothko and Frank Stella, Pop Art by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Concrete Art with Josef Albers and Max Bill, and works by the ZERO group. It is shown in collection exhibitions that change every six months and in solo presentations.

The Kunsthalle is directed by Kathrin Weishaupt-Theopold. Since the neighboring Museum Ulm closed for renovation in 2023, it has also hosted that museum's exhibitions, most recently the presentation centered on the Lion Man.
