Expressive Überraschungen

About the museum

The villa on what is now Alexander-Puschkin-Straße was built in 1907/08 as an upper-middle-class residence in the Art Nouveau style. Its striking features include a tower with views across the town as far as the Kyffhäuser hills, its gables, and the terrace facing the garden; a small park surrounds the house.

In October 1926 the town of Nordhausen bought the property, and in 1927 it opened a municipal museum there displaying historical furniture. After extensive restoration, the building was converted into an art museum (Kunsthaus) in 2002.

An important cornerstone of the holdings is the gift from Ilsetraut Glock, who in 1998 gave the town an extensive collection of prints by renowned artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. This gave rise to the Ilsetraut-Glock-Grabe-Stiftung, a foundation that regularly awards the Nordhäuser Grafikpreis (Nordhausen Printmaking Prize).

Today the Kunsthaus presents numerous temporary exhibitions every year: themed shows featuring works of classical modernism – on clowns, flowers, or the color red, for example – presentations of regional artists, and the exhibitions for the printmaking prize. The park is also used for events.
