Alongside the silhouette art of Ernst Moritz Engert, drawings and rarely shown exhibits by the artist can be seen in the Engert room, running in parallel with the temporary exhibitions.
The exhibition presents the history of the collection with classics by Astler, Fuchs, Kiefer, Panzner, Politzer and Wolf, newer donations, rarely shown works and photographs, supplemented by pieces from the city archive and works by Doris Jung-Rosu.
About the museum
The Kunstsammlungen der Stadt Limburg go back to two donations to the city. Silhouette artist Ernst Moritz Engert himself established a foundation in 1978 that comprises more than 700 works, mainly silhouette cuttings but also drawings and graphics. In 1980 the city also acquired the estate of the Expressionist painter Josef Eberz, best known for his designs of churches with frescoes, mosaics and stained glass. Through further purchases, it became, according to the city, the most extensive Eberz collection in Germany.
The museum opened on September 20, 1985, in the Historic Town Hall on Fischmarkt. Today the holdings comprise around 5,000 works by more than 40 artists; alongside Engert and Eberz, works by Karl Baumann, Rudolf Fuchs, Josef Müller-Pauly and Adam Wolf are represented, and later donations added paintings, ceramics and photography. Over four decades, more than 200 exhibitions have been shown.
The rooms host a changing program of contemporary art, regional positions and photography, run by the city's Cultural Office together with the Förderkreis Bildende Kunst (visual arts support circle). A permanent presentation on the third floor is devoted to Engert's silhouettes, etchings and drawings. The building is not barrier-free.
