About the museum

The roots of the Landesmuseum (state museum) go back to 1803, when Mainz, then a French departmental capital, received 36 paintings from Paris by decree of Napoleon. Together with Roman finds and altars from dissolved churches, they were first displayed in a university building. In 1842 the municipal collections moved into the Electoral Palace; the Mainz Antiquities Society, founded in 1844, ran the Antiquities Museum until 1910, when responsibility passed to the city.

In 1937 the Antiquities Museum opened in the former electoral stables on Große Bleiche, whose roof is still crowned by a golden horse. During World War II most of the holdings were moved to safety, but the buildings were destroyed. After reconstruction, the new museum complex with a picture gallery and the Antiquities Museum opened in 1962.

In 1967 the state of Rhineland-Palatinate took over the museum and merged the two collections into the Mittelrheinisches Landesmuseum; it has been called Landesmuseum Mainz since 1986. The Steinhalle (stone hall) for Roman monuments was added in 1981. Between 2001 and 2010 the museum underwent extensive renovation; since 2008 it has been a directorate of the Generaldirektion Kulturelles Erbe Rheinland-Pfalz.

The collection spans prehistory, the Roman era, the Middle Ages and the Baroque through to 20th-century art. Its focal points are Roman stone monuments, decorative arts, the largest print and drawing collection in the state and a body of work by Max Slevogt.
