November 15, 2026 – January 31, 2027
Christmas exhibition with objects from the holdings of the Landschaftsmuseum der Dübener Heide at Burg Düben. Opening on Sunday, 15 November 2026, at 15:00.
The Landschaftsmuseum opened on September 12, 1953, in the main building of Düben Castle. The idea came from the later museum founder Willy Winkler, who, together with a working group of castle and local heritage friends, set up an exhibition on the nature, crafts, legends and customs of the Dübener Heide. The castle has been in municipal hands since 1951, and the museum is run by the town of Bad Düben.
The castle itself is an old complex at a crossing point of the Mulde river: the tower, with its half-timbered wooden frame, is the oldest building and dates from the early 13th century; from 1531 the site was the seat of an Electoral Saxon administrative office. In the Thirty Years' War it largely burned down; its present form goes back to a conversion at the end of the 18th century. The main building was renovated in the 1990s, and in 2003 the ship mill, which had lain in the castle moat since 1967, was restored.
Between 2017 and 2022 the house was again renovated and redesigned. In eleven newly designed rooms, the permanent exhibition shows how people shaped the nature of the Dübener Heide into a cultural landscape. Town history is also covered, with topics such as spa treatments, the restored shop fittings of a drugstore, and the castle tower with its panoramic view.
