About the museum

The site on the west side of Finow airfield first served the German Luftwaffe and after 1945 the Soviet air forces, who did not vacate the field until 1993. Even during the political upheaval, interested people came together: the sponsoring association was formed in May 1991, and the museum opened in March 1992 – one of the earliest initiatives of this kind in eastern Germany.

In the course of a gradual conversion, the entire squadron area of a former Soviet aviation regiment became a technology museum, without constructing any new buildings. Preserved in their original condition are, among other things, twelve aircraft shelters and ammunition bunkers from the 1970s. The open-air grounds cover about 20 to 23 hectares in the landscape of the Märkische Heide.

The collection comprises about 25 aircraft and helicopters, mostly from the period between 1945 and 1985, including several MiG fighter jets, a Tu-134, an An-2 and helicopters of the types Mi-2, Mi-8 and Ka-26. There are also wreckage parts from the Second World War, cockpits, engines and around 60 historic vehicles. Thematic focal points are the aviation history of Brandenburg in the Second World War and the Cold War.

The museum is run by a non-profit association and relies on the commitment of many volunteers, who conduct research in eleven specialist working groups, for example on aviation archaeology, the Soviet 16th Air Army, the field railway and historic fire-fighting equipment. Large events such as the OST vehicle meeting attract many guests every year, and the grounds regularly serve as a film set.
