About the museum

The two-storey bunker near Ladeburg was built between 1982 and 1986 as the protected command post of the 41st Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade “Hermann Duncker” of the National People's Army. The brigade was responsible for air defence around Berlin; from here, up to 14 anti-aircraft missile battalions were to be commanded in an emergency. The structure, cast in an open excavation, with around 1,600 square metres of usable space, over 60 rooms and a ceiling metres thick, had its own air filters, wells, emergency power supply, kitchen and rest rooms.

After reunification, the Bundeswehr took over the facility for a short time. In 1992 the bunker was decommissioned, the technology removed and the entrance sealed.

The Tierschutzverein Niederbarnim later bought the site, on which the Ladeburg animal shelter now stands, and had the access uncovered again. Since May 2002, volunteers have guided visitors through the structure. Step by step they are reconstructing the furnishings – such as the work desks and the large air situation map in the command room – and have set up an exhibition in the bunker on the history of the brigade and on air defence. The admission fees benefit the animal shelter.
