About the museum

The Lutherhaus on Eisenach's Lutherplatz is considered one of the oldest and most beautiful half-timbered houses in Thuringia; the so-called Luther rooms are dated to 1356. Martin Luther attended the Latin school at St. Georgen from 1498 to 1501 and during that time lived with the Cotta and Schalbe families, who owned the property back then. Since the 19th century, the house has been one of the best-known memorial sites of the Reformation.

After the building had been used as an inn for a time, the Protestant regional church acquired it; it opened as a church museum in 1956. Since 2013, it has been run by the nonprofit Stiftung Lutherhaus Eisenach of the Evangelische Kirche in Mitteldeutschland. For the Reformation anniversary, the house was extensively renovated from 2013 to 2015 and given a glass extension; since then it has been accessible for the first time.

The heart of the museum is the multi-award-winning, bilingual permanent exhibition "Luther und die Bibel" (Luther and the Bible), which was expanded in 2022 for the 500th anniversary of the Bible translation. Since 2019, another exhibition has critically documented the church "Dejudaization Institute" founded in Eisenach in 1939. Ai Weiwei's sculpture "man in a cube" stands in the courtyard, and changing short-format exhibitions take up topics from 20th-century church history.

The collections include holdings on Luther's life and work, which are part of the Evangelisches Pfarrhausarchiv (Protestant parsonage archive) founded in 1925, as well as a research library. The house is a European Heritage Label site.
