About the museum

The Thüringer Museum was founded in Eisenach in 1899 and at first showed its holdings in the former Dominican monastery, whose Predigerkirche (preachers' church) served as an exhibition venue from 1903. At first the focus was on decorative arts, sacred art and a prehistoric collection of finds.

The Stadtschloss on the market square was built from 1741 to 1748 by the state master builder Gottfried Heinrich Krohne; because the Eisenach princely line died out during this time, it never served as a residence. After 1918 it fell to the State of Thuringia, which later transferred it to the city in an exchange. In 1925 the city housed there the painting endowment of Curt Elschner, and in 1931 the main part of the Thüringer Museum; the medieval carved figures remained in the Predigerkirche.

The collection's main focuses are porcelain and faience of Thuringian manufactories, glass, graphic art, wrought iron and 19th-century painting, as well as folklore holdings. Since December 2021 the renovated north wing has shown the Curt-Elschner-Galerie with works of the Düsseldorf, Munich and Weimar schools of painting. The Marstall is used for temporary exhibitions. The museum also includes the Predigerkirche, the Reuter-Wagner-Museum and the tea room in the Kartausgarten.
