Literarisches Museum im Max-Eyth-Haus
Literature museum in the birthplace of Max Eyth in Kirchheim unter Teck, on the engineer-poet, other authors, and the old Latin school.
About the museum
The half-timbered house on today's Max-Eyth-Straße was built around 1540 as a Latin school and, along with the castle, is considered the oldest half-timbered building in Kirchheim's town center. Classes were held here until 1909. In 1836 Max Eyth was born in the house, son of the then headmaster Eduard Eyth; since 1923 the building has borne the name of the engineer and writer.
After the municipal library previously housed here moved into a new building, the town of Kirchheim unter Teck established a literary museum in the house in 1994. Together with the Städtisches Museum im Kornhaus, it is now part of the Städtische Museen (municipal museums).
On the upper floor, the focus is on Max Eyth (1836–1906), who worked as an engineer on steam plows in many countries and processed his experiences into stories and travel accounts; books, photographs, and his own drawings are on display. Other rooms commemorate Hermann Kurz, Hans Bethge, and Hermann Hesse, who each had a connection to the town. The ground floor is devoted to the Latin school, its pupils, and well-known Kirchheim personalities, as well as works by the botanist and illustrator Johann Simon Kerner.
