Five photo albums from three Kiel university hospitals, spanning 1885 to 1986, show how the hospitals presented themselves and what the pictures leave out.
Uses the pelvic specimens of the Kiel maternity hospital to trace the lives of individual patients and the history of obstetric research.
About the museum
The collection belongs to Christian-Albrechts-Universität and grew out of the former Institute for the History of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Faculty of Medicine. An important addition came in 1987 with a donation from the private collection of the Swiss couple Stäheli. A friends' association supports the museum.
The museum is housed in a listed building on Brunswiker Straße. The Berlin firm Gropius und Schmieden built it from 1881 to 1884 as the university library; it was one of the first stack libraries in Germany.
The exhibition combines the history of medicine and of pharmacy. On display are the complete dispensary of an 1894 pharmacy from Schiffbek and the workrooms of the St.-Jakobi-Apotheke in Lübeck, with its storeroom, poison room and laboratory. The pathology section shows specimens from the Institute of Pathology and explains the importance of cellular pathology. The holdings also include instruments and examination chairs, X-ray tubes, dental objects and around 1,000 patient portraits created in the 19th century for the surgical clinic.
Special exhibitions take up the museum's research topics, such as the pelvic specimens of the Kiel maternity hospital or Friedrich Esmarch's clinical picture collection. The museum takes part in projects to catalog objects of medical history and maintains a reference library.
