About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Schönaich is run on behalf of the municipality by the Heimatverein Schönaich (local heritage association), founded in 1987. It shows the local history as well as earlier life and work in households, crafts, and agriculture. It is housed in the Old Town Hall at the corner of Große Gasse and Wettgasse.
The house displays archaeological finds, farm tools, traditional costumes, and complete workshops. A media library allows visitors to browse pictures and documents. A separate area, the Miletitscher Heimatstube, commemorates the Danube Swabian village of Miletitsch and the people who were expelled from their homeland after the Second World War and settled in Schönaich. It displays writings, pictures, and costumes from the old homeland.
The museum also includes the Heimatscheuer (museum barn) with machines, tools, and documentation on historic trades. In 2011, two natural stone bread ovens were added there. The association plans to reorganize the exhibition, label it more clearly, and add modern media.
