Special exhibition
Overview exhibition marking the 100th birthday of the sculptor Hans Dieter Bohnet, paying tribute to his life's work.
The Städtische Galerie Böblingen has existed since 1987 and is the town's art museum. It is housed in the Zehntscheuer in the old town, a building complex in which a restored medieval structure meets a glass extension from the 1980s. The extension comes from the Stuttgart office Atelier Lohrer and received a commendation for the German Architecture Prize. The Deutsches Bauernkriegsmuseum (German Peasants' War Museum) is located in the same building.
The collection focuses on painting, graphic art and sculpture by southwest German artists' groups in the first third of the 20th century, for example from the circle of the Stuttgart Secession. Particular attention is paid to the so-called "verschollene Generation" (lost generation), that is, artists whose careers were interrupted by the two World Wars and the Nazi era. Another focus is the work of Fritz Steisslinger, who adopted Böblingen as his home and has a cabinet of his own; works by Reinhold Nägele from his time in Böblingen are also collected.
The gallery has been supported since its founding by the Galerieverein Böblingen e. V. and is led by Corinna Steimel, who took office in autumn 2013. In addition to the collection and the changing exhibitions, the team also looks after the art in the town's public spaces.
