Miniatur Wunderland
The world's largest model railway in Hamburg's Speicherstadt – with an airport, cities and landscapes at 1:87 scale.
About the museum
Miniatur Wunderland goes back to an idea by the twin brothers Frederik and Gerrit Braun, who founded the operating company in 2000. As early as August 2001, the first sections – central Germany, the fictional town of Knuffingen and Austria – opened in a historic warehouse building on Kehrwieder.
Since then, the layout has kept growing. The USA was added at the end of 2003, followed later by Scandinavia with real water, Switzerland spanning two floors, Hamburg and Knuffingen Airport, among others. With Italy, Venice and Rio de Janeiro, the Wunderland expanded across a bridge into a neighboring building; in April 2024, the Monaco & Provence section opened.
Today, twelve themed worlds cover around 1,500 square meters of model area. More than 1,200 computer-controlled trains run on more than 16 kilometers of track, along with cars, ships and planes, plus a simulated day-and-night cycle. The layout is considered the world's largest model railway and ranks among Germany's most popular attractions; in March 2025 it welcomed its 25 millionth visitor.
Expansion continues: the Amazon region as well as the Andes and the Atacama Desert are announced for the end of 2026, Central America and the Caribbean for the end of 2027, followed by a first Asia section.
