About the museum

Behind the museum is the Hamburg coffee roaster Burg, which has run a shop with a roastery on Eppendorfer Weg since 1923. Jens Burg's passion gave rise over decades to an extensive collection all about the drink, which according to the museum now comprises more than 8,500 objects, including almost 1,000 coffee grinders.

The collection found its home in Block R of the Speicherstadt on St. Annenufer, today's “Genuss Speicher.” The firm of Hansen & Studt stored and processed coffee there as early as 1896, so the museum ties in with a historic site of Hamburg's coffee trade. The exhibition is in a vaulted cellar that the museum describes as the only one of its kind in the Speicherstadt; the warehouse complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The tour follows the bean from the legend of its discovery through cultivation, harvest and processing to the Hanseatic trading office and on to the colonial goods store. Machines, roasters, grinders, pots, tableware and advertising from about 100 years, along with tins from former Hamburg roasteries, show the breadth of the subject. A particularly vivid feature is the replica of the original shop in Eppendorf. The museum is run by Teehandelskontor Sturm GmbH; it includes its own roastery, a shop and a café, and tastings and seminars on coffee, tea and gin are also held.
