About the museum
Since 1977 the Heimatverein (local heritage association) Haren has been working with the town to build a mill museum under the motto "Säen, Ernten, Mahlen, Backen" (Sowing, Harvesting, Grinding, Baking). The starting point was the Mersmühle, a cap windmill from 1825, which was fully restored to working order and opened to the public on June 6, 1980.
In the following years a miller's house from 1829, a bake house from 1809, a motor mill, a half-timbered barn and a wagon shed with a wheelwright's workshop were added. A historic well from 1854, a horse-driven gin (Pferdegöpel) and a farm garden with grain fields and old trees complete the roughly 1.8-hectare site, about two kilometers from the town center on Landegger Straße. In 2015 the grounds were expanded with a sculpture garden.
On the attic floor of the miller's house, the mill exhibition shows models of all types of mills and the interior of a mill; 50 original mills and models are on display in total. The miller's house also serves as a wedding venue for the Haren civil registry office.
