About the museum
The museum am meer opened on September 15, 2001, at Fischereihafen 19 in Büsum, under one roof with the Büsumer Fischerei-Gesellschaft. It tells of the daily life of coastal fishers, the processing of shrimp and the development of tourism in the town since 1837.
After a renovation, the building reopened in August 2023. Since then it has also housed the Aquarium am Hafen alongside the museum.
One focus is shrimp fishing: on display are a shrimp sieving system and a walk-in wheelhouse, where a film recreates a trip at sea. A short radio play makes the dangers of the job audible. The second part documents the beginnings of the spa with souvenir china, pictures, a slide show on mudflat walking and swimwear, and sounds from the spa orchestra. Outdoors lies a Spiegelkutter (traditional cutter fishing boat) from 1920.
