About the museum

The museum as it exists today opened in 1989 in the cultural center "Forum Fränkischer Hof". It continues a local history museum founded in 1930 by the sculptor and local historian Fritz Linder, which was lost at the end of the Second World War. The cultural center itself was created by renovating a Franconian multi-purpose farmstead (Mehrbauhof) that the town had acquired in 1986.

The permanent exhibition has three focal points. The history of the saline tells of the saline that was established in 1823 as the first industrial enterprise in Rappenau and produced salt until 1973. The history of the spa begins with the brine drilling of 1822 and the opening of the Sophienbad in 1834, the first brine bath in the Grand Duchy of Baden. The third area shows finds from prehistory and early history, from the Linear Pottery culture through the La Tène period to Roman estates.

Special items include drilling and catching tools from the early years of the saline, wooden brine pipelines and a model of the 1825 power transmission system. A temporary exhibition room offers space to regional artists. The museum is run jointly with the Heimat- und Museumsverein (local heritage and museum association).
