About the museum
Haßmersheim has held a leading position in the Neckar shipping trade for centuries. During the boom years of the 1960s and 1970s there were still around 100 to 120 independent shipping businesses in the town; today only a few remain. The Schifferverein Germania, founded in 1912, keeps the tradition of inland navigation alive.
Much of the boatmen's life had long lain in attics and cellars or threatened to end up in the rubbish. In the late 1980s the association wanted to preserve these relics and asked the municipality for a room. In 1997 the municipality made rooms available to it in the former Protestant schoolhouse of 1842.
On about 120 square meters, the museum displays models, steering wheels, diving suits and other objects of shipping. Through its museum work, the association hopes to inspire younger people about inland navigation.
