Museum Burg Stickhausen
Museum in the defensive tower of Burg Stickhausen from 1498: castle history, tower prison, and the apartment of a court servant's family.
About the museum
Since the 15th century, Burg Stickhausen secured the southeastern access to East Frisia. After a fortified complex from the Hanseatic period, Count Edzard I had the defensive tower built in 1498, which has survived to this day. For two centuries the castle was a contested fortress, at times occupied by hundreds of soldiers during the Thirty Years' War. Under Prussian rule, it was largely razed after 1744; the tower and parts of the gatehouse remained standing.
Stickhausen remained the seat of the district of the same name and of the district court until 1885. Afterward the complex passed through the church into private hands. Until 1985, the tower had already been accessible for about two decades as a museum run by a circle of friends, known above all for a bird exhibition.
In 2019 the Samtgemeinde Jümme (joint municipality) bought the castle and had the tower renovated. The Burgverein Stickhausen (castle association), founded in the same year, has since been setting up a new museum on a volunteer basis, which is growing step by step as a "Museum im Werden" (museum in the making). On several floors it covers the family of a court servant who lived in the tower in the 19th century with 13 children, everyday objects and the tower prison, as well as the history of the castle with a model of the complex. From the gallery there is a wide view over the land.
