About the museum
The museum sits at the southern entrance to Schkeuditz, on the site of the former castle, in the Amtsmüllerhaus built in 1632. This former residence of the Electoral Saxon official miller has housed the city museum since 1937.
After the exterior was restored from 2009 on, the permanent exhibition was completely redesigned; the building has welcomed visitors again since 2012. It presents the town’s history chronologically from the 17th to the 20th century and explains how Schkeuditz developed into a town of officials, farming burghers, fur trade and airport. A color-coded guidance system helps with orientation, and sound and film recordings deepen individual themes. In 2013 a section on urban archaeology was added, reaching back more than 7,000 years.
The outdoor grounds feature stone and iron relics from across the town area. The museum also houses an extensive archive of documents and a library of more than 2,000 titles, which can be used by registering in advance.
