Museum des Dreißigjährigen Krieges

Museum in the Old Bishop's Castle in Wittstock that presents the Thirty Years' War and the Battle of 1636 on seven thematic levels.

Opening hoursAdmission €4.50

About the museum

The museum is located in the Old Bishop's Castle in Wittstock/Dosse and has been dedicated to the Thirty Years' War since 1998. Wittstock was the scene of one of the great battles of this war in 1636, which gives the exhibition a special regional connection. The house belongs to the Kreismuseen Alte Bischofsburg (district museums of the Old Bishop's Castle).

Between 2012 and 2015 the permanent exhibition was completely redesigned. Across seven levels it covers myths and truths about the causes of the war, everyday life, soldiers' life and military technology, through to the battle and the long-awaited peace of 1648.

The exhibits include etchings by Jacques Callot, the first illustrated complete edition of the “Simplicissimus”, weapons and armor – among them a Pappenheimer breastplate –, archaeological finds, coins and copperplate engravings. Multimedia stations complement the presentation.
