About the museum

For more than seven centuries, from 1237 to 1945, Demerthin was closely tied to the noble von Klitzing family. At the beginning of the 17th century, they built a three-story manor house on older foundations, completed in 1604. Because it was hardly altered later, it is considered one of the last largely unspoiled Renaissance palaces in the Mark Brandenburg; Theodor Fontane already singled it out. Its striking features are the dormer gables on both sides of the roof and the polychrome sandstone portal.

After 1945, refugees lived in the building, and individual rooms served as a school, a co-op store, a gym and a cultural space. By the mid-1980s, the building was at risk of falling into ruin. From 1990 onward, the roof, half-timbering, tower cupola, plaster and windows were secured, and in the early 2000s the portal was restored as well; restoration of the interiors is still pending.

The building is owned by the municipality of Gumtow. The volunteer association PrignitzDorf Demerthin e. V. looks after its use: donations and loans from the surrounding villages have formed a small museum collection of everyday rural objects, and panels explain the history of the von Klitzing family. The association offers tours of the manor and church and organizes exhibitions, concerts and readings.
