About the museum
The Eisenheim estate in Oberhausen-Osterfeld was built from 1846 on behalf of the Hüttengewerkschaft Jacobi, Haniel und Huyssen for its workers and foremen. It is considered the oldest workers' housing estate in the Ruhr area. In the 1970s it was to be demolished; the persistent protest of a citizens' initiative instead secured renovation and heritage protection.
Back then, residents gathered furniture, everyday objects, and pictures and set up their own "Volksmuseum" (people's museum) in the former wash house. In 1989 the LVR Industrial Museum took over the historically significant monument together with its collection.
Today the exhibition in the wash house shows how the estate came into being some 180 years ago, where the newcomers came from, what work and daily life were like, and how resistance to demolition succeeded. In the museum apartment across the way, visitors can trace the family life of earlier times. The museum is a branch of the St. Antony-Hütte.
