Eva Rubinstein. Proof of Life

Photographs by Eva Rubinstein: portraits, empty interiors with traces of light, and a series from Poland from the 1980s that explores memory and cultural identity.

About the museum

The Museum für Gartenkunst is part of the Stiftung Schloss und Park Benrath in Düsseldorf. It is housed in the former guest, servants', and service wing of the palace, which lies between the garden parterres and the palace pond.

The permanent exhibition traces the cultural history of gardens from antiquity to the present. Alongside an overview of about 2,500 years of garden art, it covers flower fashions, sculptures in the park, garden plans, topiary, the garden as pharmacy, and the import of rare plants. The palace of Schloss Benrath with its gardens, and Düsseldorf as a garden city, are also presented.

Paintings, sculptures, porcelain, prints, tools, and valuable books are combined in 41 rooms covering about 2,000 square meters, together with models, films, and listening stations. The partly reconstructed rooms, with historical fireplaces, doors, and wall paneling, form the frame. In the inner courtyard, a collection of historic citrus trees recalls the Benrath orangery tradition between April and October.
