Museum für historische Wehrtechnik
Association museum in Röthenbach an der Pegnitz with weapons, ammunition, communications, and anti-aircraft technology, mainly from the first half of the 20th century.
About the museum
The nonprofit association Museum für historische Wehrtechnik was founded in February 1983; in June 1984 the museum opened on grounds provided by the Diehl-Stiftung at Diehl Metall in Röthenbach an der Pegnitz. According to its statutes, the association is dedicated to researching and presenting military technology, especially in Germany in the first half of the 20th century.
From a single building, the exhibition grew to several buildings and halls with over 1,000 square meters as well as an outdoor area with field howitzers, cannons, and anti-aircraft guns. One focus is one of the largest publicly accessible ammunition collections in Germany; in addition there are infantry weapons, communications and radio equipment, optics, gas and air-raid protection, searchlights, and aviation and bunker equipment. Since 2006 there has also been a model-building area.
Volunteer members maintain and restore the objects, help identify military-history finds, and conduct research on, among other things, aircraft crashes and air defense in northern Bavaria. Several buildings are currently being refurbished.
