About the museum

Claus Merk laid the foundation of the collection in the mid-1970s with a Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet, which he restored together with his wife and which is still on display today. Over the decades, the Merk family collected automobiles, motorcycles, and nostalgic everyday objects.

In 2010, the family had a former production hall of the Johann Schlee window factory in the Schafhof district converted. On April 2, 2011, the Merks Motor Museum opened there as Nuremberg's first car museum; it is operated by Merks Motor Museum GmbH.

Today, according to the museum, it displays more than 120 automobiles and over 100 motorcycles and mopeds, including machines from former Nuremberg manufacturers. In addition, there are bicycles, mainly of the Hercules brand, Triumph typewriters, radios from Nuremberg companies, a telephone collection with a postal section, a 1950s office and a 1930s kitchen, and more than 2,000 model cars. An event area was created in the front section, where brand meetups such as the Hercules-Tag, collectors' fairs, and an open regulars' get-together are held regularly.
