About the museum
The museum is located in the Präsidentenkloster, which the Gottorf chancellor Johann Adolf Kielmann von Kielmannseck had built in 1656 as an almshouse. Twelve chambers provided space for ten residents and two family servants in need of care. In 1932, the city of Schleswig took over the almost unchanged building and had it modernized.
In the western wing, in the restored rooms of the almshouse including its chapel, the Museum für Outsiderkunst was established in 1995 as a branch of the Stadtmuseum Schleswig. It is dedicated to the artistic creativity of people who were long pushed to the margins of society.
Since January 1, 2013, the city has operated the museum together with Hesterberg & Stadtfeld gGmbH, a company of the Stiftung Diakoniewerk Kropp. Thanks to this partnership, the museum can show at least three exhibitions a year and offer additional cultural activities. The east wing of the building houses the Ostdeutsches Heimatmuseum (East German local history museum).
