About the museum
The museum has been housed since 1979 in the Präsidentenkloster on Stadtweg, a building from 1656 that Johann Kielmann von Kielmannseck, chancellor to the Dukes of Gottorf, had built as an almshouse. Until 1973, elderly residents lived there; today two museums share the two wings, with a historic chapel in between.
Members of the East and Central German regional associations (Landsmannschaften) built up the collection and still look after it on a volunteer basis. It is arranged by region: Silesia and the Sudetenland, Pomerania and East Prussia each have their own room. On display are models, textiles, maps, photographs, souvenirs and personal keepsakes; the hallway also holds traditional costumes and a handcart.
The house sees itself as a place of encounter. It informs visitors about the everyday life, outlook, culture and customs of people in eastern and central Germany before 1945, and recalls war, flight and expulsion as a reminder of the importance of peace and tolerance.
