About the museum
The Gotisches Haus (Gothic House) was built from 1823 as a hunting lodge commissioned by Landgravine Elizabeth for her husband Friedrich VI Joseph, at the Großer Tannenwald. After the landgrave's death in 1829 it was never used as planned and later served very different purposes. A fire in 1980 destroyed the interior.
The municipal historical museum traces back to a donation from 1916: Albert Lindheimer gave the city the collection of the Balmer sisters. The museum changed locations several times and moved in 1985 into the rebuilt Gothic House. From 2012 onward, the Horex Museum served as a second location for industrial history.
Because of missing climate control and fire-safety deficiencies, the house closed for renovation in 2020. The facade was returned closer to its historical appearance, and the technology was renewed. Since the reopening in September 2025, the collection of around 40,000 objects has been shown gradually in changing presentations.
