Retrospective of the New Objectivity painter who worked in Sommerhausen, with around 50 paintings and about 100 works on paper – deserted cityscapes and images of industry and machines.
First solo exhibition in Franconia by the Leipzig artist, featuring ceramics, photography, and painting on questions of identity and diversity; title not yet announced.
About the museum
The museum's roots go back to 1941, when the city of Würzburg, then under Nazi administration, founded a Städtische Galerie (municipal gallery), initially headed by the painter and printmaker Heiner Dikreiter. After wartime destruction and reconstruction, the gallery resumed permanent display of its holdings in 1966. Because of these origins, the museum today conducts dedicated research into the provenance of its works.
In 2002 the collection moved into the Kulturspeicher at the Alter Hafen, a listed granary that had undergone an extensive conversion. The historic rubble-stone building was extended with a glass addition; since then it has offered some 3,500 square meters for the collection and temporary exhibitions. In 2005 the museum received the Bavarian Museum Prize.
The Städtische Sammlung (municipal collection) comprises painting, sculpture, and works on paper from the 19th to the 21st century, focusing on artists with ties to Franconia – from Romanticism and Biedermeier through Impressionism to the present day. The estate of the Würzburg sculptor Emy Roeder holds a special place.
The second pillar is the Sammlung Peter C. Ruppert, on long-term loan since 2002 and one of Europe's major collections of Concrete Art, with post-1945 works from more than 20 countries. The program is rounded out by temporary exhibitions, an inclusive museum app, and an extensive range of accessibility services, for which the museum is certified under the “Reisen für Alle” (Travel for All) scheme.
