About the museum
Schloss Elisabethenburg was built between 1682 and 1692 as the baroque residence of the dukes of Meiningen and still shapes the town's appearance today. Later generations redesigned rooms in the styles of Classicism and Historicism; the living rooms of Duke Georg II, the "Theaterherzog" (Theater Duke), in particular reflect the taste of the 19th century.
Today the palace houses the Meininger Museen (Meiningen Museums). The art collection ranges from the early Renaissance to the 19th century and includes paintings, furniture, porcelain and musical instruments. Another focus is music history: the Meiningen court orchestra (Hofkapelle) has existed since 1690. The house holds materials on it, the Max-Reger-Archiv and documents on Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner.
