The original 1909 stage set “Lager vor Pilsen” (Camp before Pilsen), based on a design by Georg II, complemented by sketches, photos, and a film about theater work then and now.
On display for the first time: the restored last stage set from the collection, never before presented, made in the studio of the Brückner brothers.
About the museum
The Theatermuseum commemorates the heyday of the Meiningen Court Theater, which under Duke Georg II set standards across Europe in the late 19th century with realistic, meticulously designed productions and extensive touring. The Meininger Museen preserve a large collection of painted stage sets from this period, most of them created in the Coburg studio of the Brückner brothers based on the duke's designs.
The museum is housed in the Reithalle (riding hall) on Schlossplatz, which goes back to a royal stables building designed in 1797 but never completed. The building later served for many years as a sports hall and event venue, was renovated in 1998/99, and opened as the Theatermuseum in May 2000.
At the center is always a restored original stage set, which is installed at full size for an extended period and brought to life in performances with light, sound, and film. Designs, costumes, playbills, and photographs complement the presentation. Since 2005, benefit concerts by well-known artists have funded the restoration of further sets.
