Museum Lyonel Feininger

Museum at the Quedlinburg Schlossberg with the world's largest holdings of Lyonel Feininger's prints and exhibitions of graphic art.

Opening hoursAdmission from €9 Partially accessible

About the museum

The museum is based on the collection of the Quedlinburg lawyer and Bauhaus student Hermann Klumpp (1902–1987). Before their emigration to the USA in 1937, Lyonel Feininger and his wife Julia entrusted him with important parts of the work, which Klumpp saved in Quedlinburg from destruction as "degenerate art". After Julia Feininger's death and the agreement with the heirs, the collection was made publicly accessible.

On January 17, 1986, the Lyonel-Feininger-Galerie opened in a municipal historicist museum building from 1901 at the foot of the Schlossberg. From 1993, an extension with additional exhibition space and storage was built, and the museum reopened in 1997. This was followed by the renovation of the house at Schlossberg 11 and a new side wing with a studio, opened in 2013; since 2008 the Klopstockgartenhaus has also been used for events.

The operator changed in 2006 to the Stiftung Moritzburg and in 2014 to today's Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt, under which the museum was expanded into a museum for graphic arts. Since 2017, in cooperation with the city, it has also been cataloguing the municipal copperplate engraving collection (Städtische Kupferstichsammlung). In 2023 it was renamed Museum Lyonel Feininger. The holdings are regarded as the world's largest single collection of Feininger's prints, supplemented by paintings, watercolors, and drawings.
