City museum and tourist information in Niesky's oldest house, with a permanent exhibition on town history and the Herrnhut Moravian Church (Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine).
Historical photographs show how businesses in Niesky have developed from the founding of the Brüdergemeine (Moravian community) in 1742 to the present day. Shown in the Johann-Raschke-Haus.
About the museum
On August 8, 1742, Bohemian religious refugees who had joined the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine (Moravian Church) laid the foundation stone for the first three houses of Niesky. The house of the linen weaver and first village head Johann Raschke has survived to this day. It is a two-story Bohemian post-frame building with St. Andrew's crosses and an Umgebinde (timber-frame with a surrounding wooden structure) construction, including a corner-block room where the family's looms once stood.
Around 1799 the house and all other houses on the square were plastered over, which hid the Bohemian half-timbering. The building served as a residence until 1981 and, from 1788 to 1860, also as a post station. In 1992, during reconstruction work, the original half-timbering reappeared; during the comprehensive renovation in 1995/96, it was decided to expose the timbering and restore the Umgebinde construction.
The museum has been located in the oldest house in town since 1986, and since 1991 the tourist information has also been housed there. This continues the tradition of the former museum of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine, considered one of the oldest museums in Saxony; its collections were largely lost after 1945 and rebuilt through civic commitment. The permanent exhibition shows episodes from the town's history, such as those concerning the Moravian Church, industry and timber house construction. The Konrad-Wachsmann-Haus also belongs to the Museum Niesky.
