About the museum

The house was built in 1927 to designs by the young architect Konrad Wachsmann as a residence for a board member of the Niesky timber construction firm Christoph & Unmack. It is a cubic log building whose partition walls do not protrude from the facade, which is why it looks unusually smooth and generously glazed.

Later, the chief physician of the local hospital lived here. After 1945, the building served public purposes, among others as a land registry office and as the seat of the FDJ (Free German Youth) district leadership. It was only in 1983 that it was recognized as a work by Wachsmann and placed under monument protection; long years of vacancy followed.

In 2005, the city of Niesky acquired the house and had it restored in keeping with monument preservation rules from 2011 to 2014. Using historical plans and photographs, the original strong room colors were restored with linseed oil paint. The Forum Konrad-Wachsmann-Haus opened in October 2014.

Today, the permanent exhibition shows the development of industrially prefabricated timber house construction, using the example of the firm Christoph & Unmack, which was Europe's largest timber construction company until 1945. The house belongs to the Museum Niesky and also serves as a venue for conferences and events.
