Museum Riegel
Volunteer-run archaeology museum in the Alte Schule community center about everyday life in Roman Riegel, with finds from the Mithras sanctuary.
About the museum
Museum Riegel is run by the Geschichtsverein Riegel (Riegel history society), founded in 1986 to research and preserve the history of this Kaiserstuhl village. The society has operated the museum entirely with volunteers since its opening in 2006. The concept was developed by Dr. Christian Dreier; in the opening year, the municipality and the society received the Baden-Württemberg Archaeology Prize.
The museum is located in the rear part of the “Alte Schule” (old school) community center in the village center. Following changes to the premises, it was expanded and reopened in January 2012; a second section on the beginnings of European spaceflight, added at that time, was dissolved again in September 2023.
Today the focus is on provincial Roman archaeology: around 300 excavated finds, diagrams, and reconstructions depict everyday life in ancient Riegel some 2,000 years ago. Visitors can walk into a 1:25 scale model of the basilica. From the Mithras sanctuary excavated on the edge of the village in the 1970s come a completely preserved votive altar and a rare cult sword; the remains of the temple can be visited in the village. Other pieces include the ointment stamp of the eye doctor Lucius Virius Carpus and a terra sigillata vessel with a hippocampus, found in 2000, which became the museum's emblem.
