About the museum
In 1984 the town of Endingen acquired the Üsenberger Hof, a half-timbered house probably built in the 15th century, and after renovation in 1994 set up the Vorderösterreich-Museum there. Endingen and large parts of the Breisgau belonged to the House of Habsburg, and thus to Further Austria, for centuries. The town is still shaped today by buildings, churches and traditions from that period.
The exhibition across seven rooms documents, with a view of the Breisgau, the history of the “habsburgischen Vorlande” (Habsburg foreland territories). These were combined into a separate province of Further Austria after Maria Theresa’s administrative reform of 1752. Pictures and display boards explain the administrative history of the Vorlande, the history of the Breisgau nobility and of the Further Austrian prelates.
