About the museum

The Neue Kammern (New Chambers) were built in 1747 as an orangery west of Sanssouci Palace. Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff designed the low building, about 110 meters long, which housed the potted plants from the terraces in winter. It forms the counterpart to the Picture Gallery on the east side of the palace.

A little more than two decades later, Frederick the Great had the orangery converted into a guest palace. Under the direction of Georg Christian Unger, the exterior was largely preserved, while a sequence of banquet halls and guest apartments was created inside. The result is considered a late work of Frederician Rococo: the Jasper Hall in the center, lined with jasper and marble; the Ovid Gallery with gilded reliefs based on the Metamorphoses; the Blue Gallery with stucco marble imitating lapis lazuli; and cabinets with elaborate wood marquetry.

The Neue Kammern have been open as a museum since 1924. The building underwent extensive restoration between 1963 and 1987, followed from 2019 to 2023 by work on the sculptures in the grounds.

Today the Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten (Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation) presents the halls and guest apartments with furniture, paintings, and antique busts. The Neue Kammern are open seasonally from April to October and can be explored individually with the SANSSOUCI app; in the summer months the banquet halls also serve as a venue for receptions, concerts, and weddings.
