About the museum
Frederick the Great had the Chinese House built by the architect Johann Gottfried Büring, following his own sketches. The pavilion in the chinoiserie style was erected between 1755 and 1764; the Seven Years' War considerably delayed construction, so the interior furnishing of the cabinets only followed after 1763. The cloverleaf-shaped floor plan is modeled on a French precedent, the Maison du trèfle in Lunéville.
The building served as garden decoration and as a backdrop for smaller celebrations. Gilded, life-size figures characterize the exterior; the sculptors Peter Benckert and Johann Gottlieb Heymüller created the theatrical sculptures. Palm-like columns, ceiling paintings with imaginative "Chinese" society scenes, and porcelain on gilded consoles shape the interior. Chinoiserie was fashionable at many European courts in the 18th century.
In 1789 the neighboring Chinese Kitchen was remodeled. From 1990 to 1993 the house was restored, and original wall coverings were reconstructed. Today the Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten (Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation, SPSG) looks after the house, which visitors can tour without a guide.
