NordJURA-Museum

Regional museum for the northern Franconian Jura in the Baroque Kastenhof in Weismain – with cannons from the Thirty Years' War.

Opening hours
Limited operations. During the town hall renovation, the city library is housed in the museum rooms; the permanent exhibition can therefore be viewed only to a limited extent.

About the museum

The NordJURA-Museum sees itself as a regional museum for the northern part of the Franconian Alb. Its collection goes back to an older Weismain museum from the early 20th century; in its present form it opened in May 2004 after a redesign.

The museum is housed in the Kastenhof, a Baroque administrative building that was built between 1701 and 1703 to designs by Johann Leonhard Dientzenhofer and is a protected monument. The city archive and tourist information are in the same building complex.

The permanent exhibition spans from the geological origin of the Jura landscape through the town's fortifications, the Thirty Years' War and the religious fragmentation of the region to the traditional trades: breweries, sheep farming, mills, fishing and textile crafts. An eye-catcher is the guns from the time of the Thirty Years' War.

During the renovation of the Weismain town hall, the city library has temporarily moved into the museum rooms, which is why the exhibition is currently only partially accessible.
