About the museum
The Klosterlangheim local history museum has existed since 1982. The association of Heimatfreunde (local friends) Klosterlangheim had decided to set up a museum for the 850th anniversary of the monastery's founding, showing monastery and village history alike. Collected were secularization holdings from surrounding parishes, family possessions, pieces from the Lichtenfels city museum and a purchased portrait of a Langheim abbot.
The town of Lichtenfels provided a surviving monastery building: the south wing of the abbey, which Leonhard Dientzenhofer built between 1690 and 1700 and which was almost entirely demolished after the monastery was dissolved in 1803. The Cistercian monastery of Langheim had existed for 670 years and was one of the most influential monasteries in the region; it also looked after the pilgrimage to Vierzehnheiligen.
Highlights include a model of the monastery complex, about twelve square meters in size, as it looked before the fire of 1802, and the 1579 tomb slab of Barbara von Schaumberg, which was honored as a "Heimatschatz" (local treasure) in a Bavarian competition. Since April 2025, a 3D landscape model has stood in front of the house; with the Cisterscapes app it makes the traces of the monks around the monastery grounds visible. The museum is looked after by the Heimatfreunde association; professional management lies with the city archivist.
