About the museum
The Ortsgeschichtliche Sammlung Walkenried is located in the basement of the former primary school, directly next to the municipal library. It belongs to the archive of the Verein für Heimatgeschichte Walkenried / Bad Sachsa und Umgebung (association for local history), which runs the collection on a volunteer basis.
The centerpiece is the permanent exhibition "Gips – mehr als weißes Pulver," shown since 2010. Using geological specimens, photographs and display panels, it explains how the karst landscape of the southern Harz was formed and how the mining and processing of gypsum shaped the town and the region economically.
Changing exhibitions address other topics of regional history, such as industry beyond gypsum mining, the Thirty Years' War and the development of rail connections. A small painting collection shows works by locally significant artists such as Karl Helbing and Walther Hans Reinboth.
