About the museum
The museum is on the upper floor of the former Villa Frind from 1886, which served as the town building office and spa administration until the museum moved in in 1981. On about 250 square meters the rooms are arranged by themes such as winter sport, crafts, and local and club history; the painting collection can additionally be seen in rooms of the town library on the ground floor. The museum is run on a volunteer basis by the Förderverein Heimatmuseum Bad Sachsa e.V. (friends' association).
One focus is well over a century of winter sport on skis and runners at the Ravensberg: skis from Ski-Schäfer, the largest North German manufacturer, steering sleds, luge, skeleton and bob. Athletes from Bad Sachsa dominated the German steering sled championships in the early 1950s, and in 1911 the town was among the founding clubs of the Deutscher Rodelbund (German Luge Federation).
The second focus shows the change from a border and carters' town to a spa town with villas of Harz spa architecture. Workshops of old trades such as apothecary, cooper, plumber, shoemaker or weaver complement the local history. The lease at the present site runs out in early 2028; the museum is then to move.
