About the museum

For a long time Tutzing lacked a place where the municipality could show its past. At the same time, the old schoolhouse on Thomaplatz directly on Lake Starnberg was threatened with decay. The building had been erected between 1824 and 1826, served as a school until 1880 and had stood empty since the late 1990s.

On the suggestion of the then mayor Peter Lederer, the municipal council decided in 2008 to convert the house into a museum and operate it itself. The restoration from November 2008 to April 2010 was financed with donations; in May 2010 the local museum opened.

Across 85 square meters in three rooms, the exhibition leads through local history – from archaeological finds and Bronze Age graves through the period of manorial rule and the two world wars to the territorial reform of 1978. Fishing and crafts, on which many Tutzing residents lived, take up a lot of space. Since 2018 the museum has also housed a church organ by Philipp Franz Schleich from 1720. One room is reserved for changing exhibitions with a regional connection.
