The Panometer building is a former gas holder of the Dresden-Reick gasworks. The sandstone structure was built around 1880 to plans by Dresden's city architect Theodor Friedrich, a student of Gottfried Semper, and held up to 30,000 cubic meters of gas. Until 1973 the facility supplied the city with town gas; inside, the dome of the rotunda rises to around 39 meters.
The artist Yadegar Asisi had the gasometer converted into an exhibition venue for monumental panoramic paintings and coined the term Panometer, from panorama and gasometer. For the city's 800th anniversary, it opened on December 9, 2006, with a panorama of Baroque Dresden around 1756, which more than half a million people saw in the first two years. The images are around 27 meters high and about 105 meters in circumference, and are viewed from a platform in the middle of the room.
In the following years, panoramas of ancient Rome, Baroque Dresden, and the city destroyed by the air raids of 1945 took turns. From 2024, "Amazonien" (Amazonia) presented a nature theme for the first time, and since March 27, 2026, the Panometer has been showing the underwater panorama "Great Barrier Reef", which is based on expeditions with the Australian documentary filmmaker Ben Cropp. The venue is operated by DDV Sachsen GmbH.
