About the museum
The Panoramamuseum shows works by the painter and graphic artist Hans Kloss (1938–2018), who trained as a ceramic painter in Schwäbisch Gmünd and later lived in Lorch. The focus is on two large pictorial works on the city's history: the “Gmünder Epos” of 15 large oil paintings, created in 2012 for the city's 850th anniversary, and the Staufersaga panorama, completed in 2015. The latter is a circular painting about 17 meters in circumference that transports viewers back to the time of the Staufer (Hohenstaufen) dynasty.
The museum is housed on the second floor of the Grät on the market square, a half-timbered house that is medieval at its core. It opened in April 2017 and is run by volunteers. The collection also includes the Irene triptych, which Kloss painted in 2008 in memory of Queen Irene of Byzantium.
The pictures combine history, legend and views of the town, and serve as a vivid introduction to Gmünd's past. Admission is free; guided tours for groups are offered on request.
